Ragi Energy Balls For Instant Energy for Dieters, Pregnant or Lactating Ladies

Ragi Energy Balls For Instant Energy for Dieters, Pregnant or Lactating Ladies

Trying to lose weight can be mentally frustrating and physically exhausting. We have to give up many things we love to eat and try to make peace with fruits or vegetables that we used to always avoid.

Many dieters including me are tend to go overbroad with starving self before a special occasion or just to reach the weight loss goal sooner. We fall flat on our face for a few times and then we learn that starving is not the solution. We need an energy booster now and then. If you are eating less for a long time or are pregnant or breast feeding your new baby then you need the goodness of Ragi.

Dieting is not eating less but eating the right food in proper portion. Even occasionally indulging into something that is considered bad or sinful is allowed as long as you get back on track with eating healthy.

That’s the word I like to use instead of dieting – “Eating Healthy: The right thing in the right amount”. We need to look for food that will keep us healthy, active, in a good shape and will fill us up with energy. Yes such food does exist and no you don’t need to spend a fortune on them. I call these special types of food as Superfood.

When I spent a month in the naturopathy centre near Pune I found such a Superfood that I simple love. It is loaded with goodies like calcium, iron, much required fibres and vitamins like A, B1, B2, B3. It is a godsend for people who are trying to make their bones healthy as it helps bone development and prevents osteoporosis.

Benefits of Ragi/ Nachani:

1. For Bones: Calcium: Rich source of calcium. More than any other grain hence a daily consumption can make our bones stronger.

2. For Digestion: This little grain is loaded with fibre that helps us lose weight as it aids our digestion. A small amount of Ragi can prevent bloating.

3. For Cholestrol: Ragi helps to decrease bad cholesterol. It also controls fat in liver.

4. For Diabetes: Ragi controls sugar levels and helps prevent diabetes.

5. For Pregnancy: Ragi provides the calcium and iron requirement of would be mothers and their baby.

6. For Breastfeeding: To have a good flow of milk and provides the new mom with the much needed nourishment.

7. For Blood Pressure: As Ragi controls bad cholesterol it prevents blockages of arteries and also prevents high blood pressure and stroke.

8. For Anaemia: Ragi is a rich source of iron which helps cure Anaemia.

9. For Weight Loss: Ragi is full of fibre and energy which keeps us full for a longer time and cure constipation and bloating. Ragi is a healthier alternative to wheat. I highly recommend adding small amount of Ragi flour in your wheat flour that you use for your daily roties and bread. I personally prefer the Ragi flour Roti made of only Ragi flour and not mixing it with anything but only water to enough to knead it into soft dough.

The recipe below is a special recipe for those special days when you feel weak and need a big boost of energy. It’s far better, healthier and tastier than any commercial energy bar or drink. I advise to go light on these if you are trying to lose weight as they are enriched with Ghee, Jaggery and Peanuts.

Ragi or nachani energy balls for instant energy:

Ingredients:
1 heaped cup Ragi or Nachani flour
1/4 cup Til or Sesame Seeds (white)
1/4 cup Peanuts
1/2 cup Jaggery grated
1 teaspoon Cardamom / Elaichi Powder
2 – 3 tablespoons Ghee or Clarified Butter

Method:
1. Dry roast Til or Sesame Seeds on a low flame till you get aroma.
2. Dry roast Groundnuts or Peanuts. Cool and remove skin. Finely grind both together.
3. Then add Jaggery and Cardamom / Elaichi Powder to the blended mixer and grind again.
4. In a frying pan dry roast Ragi flour. Add 1 or 2 tsps of ghee while roasting. There will be a pleasant aroma. Remove from heat when the colour gets slightly darker.
5. In a bowl mix all the ingredients
6. Take small portions of this mixture and roll them into balls. If the mixture is dry then add little ghee for making balls

Variation:
a. If you are having trouble making balls of the above mixture you can flatten it out in a plate or a baking tray. Press it and cut it into cubes.
b. If you are allergic to peanuts you can add any other nut of your choice.
c. If you are not sure about the jaggery taste then instead of using only jiggery you can use a mixure of jaggery and powdered sugar. I would always recommend dark organic jaggery over sugar as it is the healthier option.

Replace Rice with Broken Wheat/ Dalia for a Slimmer and Healthier You

Replace Rice with Broken Wheat/ Dalia for a Slimmer and Healthier You

Rice has always been an important part of meal for me. Indian food has a treasure of delicious rice preparations and they are very addictive. We Indians love our rice. Different parts of the nation like rice in their own special way. In south it is enjoyed with Sambhar, in north there is Rajma or Dal Makhani, in east Macher Jhol (Bengali Fish Curry) and in west has its Gujrati Kaadi or Rajasthani Dal Khichadi or Maharastrian Varan. These are just few gems of the treasure. There are hundreds of recipes if not more that celebrate rice in India and I love them all.

Do you get the picture how important rice is for me? Few months back I was advised by my yoga instructor to give up rice to get into my desired weight. She knew it was my weakness and knew I wouldn’t follow portion so she advised me to stop eating it completely. Rice was the main reason I was not reaching my desired weight and giving it up was the right thing to do but was it easy? On no it was not. I struggled so bad to fight the cravings.

Even if I could avoid rice for few days I would easily cheat on my if I came across any delicious rice preparation. My will power was very week and the guilt of not staying on the diet would make me depressed. Luckily I found a solution to this problem. I started experimenting with Dalia also known as Lapsi Rava or Broken wheat. It is far healthier than rice even brown rice and has fewer calories.

Within only few days I noticed a lot of improvement in my . My energy levels were higher. I felt full for longer time which stopped irregular intakes of snacks. My digestion was better which made me feel lighter. I don’t have to deal with unnecessary calories and guilt anymore. Dalia is cooked exactly like rice and it tastes like rice with dals and curries. Dalia is an easy option for a slimmer and healthier you.

Benefits of Dalia/Cracked or Broken Wheat:

1. Great source of fiber and a healthy dalia meal can complete your daily fiber requirement

2. It is a complex carbohydrate and a rich source of magnesium

3. High in protein but low in calories

4. It is a great source of energy and has low glycemic index

5. It improves digestion and promotes faster elimination of waste and toxins from body

6. It stabilizes glucose as it releases glucose slowly into the bloodstream

7. Rich source of Vitamin B1 and B2

Dalia is cooked just like rice and can be used instead of rice in all rice preparations. Be it with dal, curry or any gravy. Dalia can be used instead of rice in Khichadi, Pulav and even Biryani. Check out the next post for some Dalia recipes I enjoy and why I never miss rice anymore.

Make Losing Weight A Game Of Your Mind And Win

This post is special because I am sharing my big secret about finally getting a grip on my weight problem. I have been struggling with an overweight body for more than a decade now. I got fed up of experimenting with weight loss solutions, diets, exercises whatever you name it I have done it.

Make Losing Weight A Game Of Your Mind And Win

Make Losing Weight A Game Of Your Mind And Win

Nothing was working for me. Everything I did; made me more and more fat. Doctors were prescribing rabbit food in the name of diet and even after eating like a bird I was not getting any thinner. Things started looking up when I stopped trying so hard. In other words I gave up trying too hard.

The world is getting obsessed with law of attraction and manifesting with thoughts ideology. This post is not to argue if that stuff works or not. I think it depends on your faith if you believe it works it will work for you and vice versa either ways you are right.

I know for sure that our mind controls our body and what we feed our mind helps us shape our body more than what we feed our stomach. Don’t believe me then ask yourself, why you are not getting results even after eating almost nothing in the name of dieting? Even after eating like a bird why the weighing scale does not budge?

Many of us have a difficult time when we try to lose weight. How we look and feel about ourselves gives clear instructions to our body how it should shape up this is why a positive body image is highly important. Your Body Image is the blueprint or commands your mind gives your body so let us try to keep it as positive as possible.

1. Grateful: Thank your body for everything it does for you all the time. Never say anything hateful about your body as your words and thoughts build up the blueprint of your body. The image you talk about or think about will become your reality so be grateful for all the things you can do because of your body.

2. Stop Negative Voices: Anything that makes you feel fat is filling your head with a negative body image. Do your best to silent all voices that remind you of not having a perfect figure. If a near one tells you that you need to lose weight thank that person for being concerned for you and while you are at it thank your body for everything it does for you. If you have an internal voice that reminds you of your excess fat all the time.

Preparing your mind for the change in your health is the biggest challenge and once we see a nice beautiful body image in our mind we can start making plans to make it a reality. Every success in life including achieving a fit body is a game of mind and the only way we can win this game is to see ourselves as winners.

Cucumber an Amazing Vegetable for Weight Loss and Much More

“He who cures a disease may be the skillfullest, but he that prevents it is the safest physician.” — Thomas Fuller

Benefits of Cucumber

Benefits of Cucumber

I believe in getting fit without starving and so I am always looking for healthy guilt free food that can be comforting without adding to our waistline. In this post I am sharing my latest lazy person’s diet food recipe that is not only healthy but simply delicious. I am sure you would enjoy this recipe as much as you enjoyed the famous Green Gram Soup. If this gives you any idea do share it with us.

If you would like to share some inventive healthy and delicious recipes on this blog please drop me at mail@thevibrantwriter.com and I will publish your recipes as a guest post. As I said earlier I am always looking for healthy options to keep my stomach full with nourishing guilt free good food.

Nowadays Cucumber is dominating my kitchen. When I studied its benefits I picked up a lot of cucumber. After eating it raw or in salads; I wanted to try something different with it. After some trial and error I am happy with one simple recipe which I have given at the end of this post. Before that let me give you some reasons to incorporate cucumber in your daily diet.

Benefits of Cucumber:

1. Helps in Weight Loss: This is what attracted me to this amazing humble vegetable. It is miraculously effective if you are trying to lose weight. Having a cucumber before each meal can help you get full with lesser calories than usual. Low calorie and high water content the perfect food to snack on whenever you feel hungry. Slice it thin or run it through a blender and have a refreshing green smoothie.

2. Promotes Digestion: If you include cucumber in your diet daily you can forever get rid of digestion problems. Cucumber is loaded with dietary fiber which effectively releases toxins from our digestive system. If you suffer from constipation have a cucumber day any of the week. Eat as many cucumbers as you can for your meal s the whole day it may sound difficult but it will cure the constipation better than any pill. One suggestion try to have your cucumber day before a rest day as on the next day of your cucumber day you will spend a lot of time in the washroom.

3. Reduces Bad Cholesterol: Cucumber has a compound called sterol which helps in reducing bad cholesterol level.

4. Relieves Joint Pain: Cucumber is a rich source of silica, vitamin A, B1, B6, C & D, Folate, Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium which promotes joint health by strengthening the connective tissues and reduces arthritis pain.

5. Prevents Gout: Cucumber lowers the uric acid levels preventing from painful gout.

6. Controls Diabetes: Cucumber juice regulates the production of insulin hormone which controls diabetes.

7. Rehydrates Body: Cucumber is mostly water loaded with vitamins that hydrate body and flush out toxins. It is highly recommended for everyone who is trying to reduce calorie intake.

8. Controls Blood Pressure: Cucumber is a rich source of potassium, magnesium and fiber which helps control blood pressure.

9. Makes Skin and Hair Beautiful: Cucumber slices are most commonly used to solve puffy eyes problems. Cucumber masks can rejuvenate skin and give it a refreshing glow. The silicon and sulfur in cucumber promotes hair growth. Drinking cucumber smoothie or juice daily can make skin and hair beautiful from inside.

10. Fights Cancer: Researchers have found compounds in cucumber that can reduce risk of cancer.

My Personal Creamy Cucumber Soup Recipe:

This is how I am having Cucumber with my meal everyday:

I make a rich creamy thick soup of fresh green cucumber. I find this hot thick soup quite comforting compared to cold salads.

The recipe is simple:
. Cut 2 cucumbers (with skin) into small cubes,
. In a deep pan or a small pressure cooker take very little oil,
. Once the oil is hot add a tsp of fennel seeds/ jerra,
. Sauté 1 onion chopped finely,
. Optional you can sprinkle little dried fenugreek leaves/ kasturi methi
. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder,
. ½ tsp coriander powder,
. ½ tsp red chilli powder,
. Salt as per taste,
. Water just enough to make thick soup, boil or pressure cook till the cucumber is easily mashable,
. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Or you can use Italian spices like parsley and oregano for a different version.
For extra flavor crush in a cube of vegetable stock.

Go ahead try this healthy wholesome soup and let me know if you liked it. I keep my soup spicy but please make it as per your taste preference.

10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting Easy

10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting Easy
10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting EasyAlan Cleaver / Foter / Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)

They say losing weight is not a sprint but a marathon and that is so right. Getting fit is not about picking up salad now and then but it’s a life time commitment. The celebrities we envy for their amazing figure stay that way because of their dedication and determination towards their health not to mention the army of experts they have to tell them what to eat. Anyways I personally hate the word dieting. I prefer eating right or eating healthy as that is exactly what one should do while trying to get slim.

It is always a good idea to get your doctor’s advice before you start any diet. There are many medical reasons why a person gains weight it can because of hormonal imbalance, PCOS, Stress, Thyroid or any other tendency in body that makes it store more fat than required. It is important that you get necessary tests done and find out the precise cause of your weight gain. Once you get a cure for the health problem that keeps you fat, losing weight will become easy and effortless. Do not follow fad diets that have one glove fits all attitude, they never work.

“Enjoy losing weight. Enjoy eating healthy, delicious food. Do not wait until you reach your destination to feel good. Take as much happiness and joy as you can from your weight loss journey.” — Harry Papas.

Find out a tailor-made diet for you from your doctor or a licensed nutritionist. The right advice will help you get all the required nourishment while you lose excess fat. If we just focus on the weighing scale we might create vitamin deficiency and invite some other health issue. Our goal should be getting completely healthy or as I always say Vibrantly Healthy and Radiantly Beautiful.

10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting Easy

1. Inspiration: Fill up your surrounding with inspiring images of yourself at your ideal weight or cut out some images of celebrities and pin them up wherever you can see them regularly like your bathroom mirror, next to your bed, in your closet, on your desk, on fridge door or on the ceiling above your bed. Anywhere and everywhere you can see. It may look silly to others but there is a reason behind this mental strategy. If you constantly see fit and healthy images your subconscious mind will pick it up and start making a new healthy blueprint for your body.

2. Preparation: Before you start eating healthy prepare your kitchen with enough stock of the right kind of food. Store enough quantity of healthy and fresh food like fruits and vegetables. Don’t wait to eat till you are starving. Prepare your healthy meal, vegetable juices/ smoothies and salads in time so you don’t snack on anything unhealthy.

3. Smaller Plates: This is the best tip to start eating well. You will notice a decrease in your food intake as soon as you start eating in smaller plates and bowls. When we were kids our parents told us to finish everything on our plate and that programming is still engraved in our mind. Hence if we eat in bigger plates we unconsciously eat more than our requirement. If you always feel bloated after meal you should immediately switch to smaller plates. Smaller portion in a small plate creates the illusion of plenty which gives a satisfying signal to our brain even before we start eating.

4. Keep away from Temptations: If you find it difficult to say no to temptations. It is a good idea to stay away from it. I will still say it is ok to have a controlled helping of your most desired food once in a while as long as it is not frequent. Avoid completely any food that leaves a guilty feeling.

5. Keep Full: The best way to stay on track with your diet is to keep yourself full with allowed or healthy options. Eat a large bowl of salad or fruits or a handful of nuts at the time you know you get hungry. If you keep healthy food nearby before your hunger pangs start you will save yourself from eating unhealthy food.

6. Raw Food: Eating raw food like salads, raw vegetables smoothing, nuts and fruits may take some getting used to but they can be a blessing for your metabolic rate. Eating raw colorful fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source of fiber that helps improve our digestion. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables before meals and during snack time will cure bloating, constipation and indigestion. Raw fruits and vegetables make our skin healthy and glowing.

7. Keep Records: By keeping records of change in your weight and measurements you keep yourself motivated. Fix a day and time to check your weight and measurements and write down the changes in diary or on your computer. Now days many mobile apps are available for this purpose. In some amazing apps you can also record daily calorie intake and number of calorie burnt after exercise. I am strongly against checking weight daily as that puts a lot of stress on us. Our weight fluctuates up and down when we are dieting so checking it on a weekly basis helps us see the exact difference.

8. Eat Slow and Enjoy your Food: When we suddenly start eating smaller portions it can feel challenging. For me the best solution for this is eating slowly and chewing food for a longer time. I do not eat in front of TV anymore. I sit in a quiet and peaceful place without any disturbance and enjoy my food for as long as I can. Of course we cannot do this for our breakfast and lunch but I advice to eat your dinner peacefully and slowly. Enjoy each and every bite of your food by eating it slowly and chewing for a longer time. Do not get negative thoughts that I do not like this food or why only I have to eat like this. Show love and respect to whatever healthy food you are having and in return you will see its positive impact on your health. By eating slowly and chewing for a longer time digests the food in a much better way. You will feel full with very little food and will avoid overeating and all its ill effects like indigestion, bloating.

9. Positive Body Image: The body image we have in our subconscious mind drafts a blueprint that each cell in our body follows. If subconsciously we feel like a fat person than we have automated our body cells to keep us fat. That is the main reason a fat person gains back all the lost weight. Similarly a person with a slim body image in the subconscious mind stays slim without much effort. Changing our subconscious mind’s body image is time consuming and challenging. In my next post I will mention tips to change our body image to slim and healthy.

10. Keep Hydrated: Dehydration can be a side effect of dieting and drink a lot of healthy fluids like water, green tea or unsweetened vegetable and fruit juices can keep you hydrated. Healthy fluid maintains our body’s pH balance and keeps our skin soft and young.

Tender Coconut Water A Super Drink For Weight Loss And Much More

Tender Coconut Water A Super Drink For Weight Loss And Much More

Tender Coconut Water A Super Drink For Weight Loss And Much More

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” — Henry David Thoreau

This year’s winter gave us more chills than ever before. Extreme fluctuations in climate are the nature’s way to tell us that we have to face the consequences of our actions. Winter is over (almost) and we can feel the presence of summer around us especially in supermarkets where they are stocking up all kinds of drinks in huge quantities.

It’s really sad that we have more options of unhealthy colored sugar-water easily available than healthy drinks. Even the so called pure fruit juices sold in tetra packs are not at all close to the real deal. If we really want pure juice we’ll have to squeeze it ourselves but do we have the time? I doubt that.

After ‘Green Gram’ and ‘Super Foods’ post I think we should discuss about a super drink especially for the summers. I am a big fan of Tender Coconut Water not only because it helps us lose weight but also has other health benefits. I don’t think there is a need to mention how wonderful it tastes and how refreshing it is on a sunny day. I always prefer a nice big green tender coconut over any bottle or can, don’t you?

Benefits of Tender Coconut Water:

1. It’s loaded with Goodies: It is rich in Vitamins and Minerals like Vitamin B & C, Calcium, Potassium and Glucose. If you work out a lot then instead of drinking high sugar and calorie so called energy drinks you should try Tender Coconut Water. It will recharge you with above mentioned vitamins and minerals and it’s healthier.

2. It good to Shed Some Unwanted Weight: It is a natural, low-calorie, refreshing drink than can be a healthy alternative to any other sugary drink. Tender coconut water contains strong digestive enzymes that strengths our digestive system and helps us lose weight.
It also detoxifies the body and benefits the metabolism as well as immune system. So if your stomach gets upset while you are vacationing on a tropical paradise have plenty of coconut water and you will feel better without any medication.
It’s has diuretic properties that can help reduce swelling and edema or water retention. Tender coconut water is easily available everywhere even in cities far from coastal regions so don’t wait to have it till you go for a holiday have it as often as you can. I am sure you’ll love it.

3. It’s good for the Heart: Regular intake of tender coconut water helps regulate the blood pressure. It helps to lower the high cholesterol level in the blood system. Regular intake also improves the flexibility of arteries and veins as it increases good cholesterol.

4. It fights against Ageing: Tender coconut water is alkaline in nature which helps balance body’s PH level. It is loaded with minerals and vitamins and has amazing hydration properties that recharges and refreshes tired cells working as a natural anti-aging agent.

5. It can be a great after workout drink: In World War II British and Japanese injured soldiers were given coconut water when saline solution was in short supply. When we lose a lot of energy or get dehydrated or many be go for a vigorous workout then we need to reload the depleted cells and muscles and coconut water can work for it. The high level of potassium can also cure muscle cramps and the minerals and vitamins can rejuvenate the body.

6. It’s Amazing for expecting ladies: Most women unfailingly drink coconut water during pregnancy as per the advice of elders. This advice is shared from one generation to another because of its many benefits some of which are mentioned in this post. I would like to highlight the benefits during pregnancy below but as I always insist please check it with your doctor before trying anything new.

Coconut water is a natural, diuretic, antioxidant drink loaded with minerals, calcium, vitamins and much more that improves the immune system of the mother and baby.

It has anti bacterial properties that protect the mother and baby from infections.

It is believed that having regular coconut water will help the baby to get a glowing skin.

It helps the mother with uneasiness that happens during pregnancy especially indigestion, bloating, acidity and gas.
