Trying to lose weight can be mentally frustrating and physically exhausting. We have to give up many things we love to eat and try to make peace with fruits or vegetables that we used to always avoid.

Many dieters including me are tend to go overbroad with starving self before a special occasion or just to reach the weight loss goal sooner. We fall flat on our face for a few times and then we learn that starving is not the solution. We need an energy booster now and then. If you are eating less for a long time or are pregnant or breast feeding your new baby then you need the goodness of Ragi.

Dieting is not eating less but eating the right food in proper portion. Even occasionally indulging into something that is considered bad or sinful is allowed as long as you get back on track with eating healthy.

That’s the word I like to use instead of dieting – “Eating Healthy: The right thing in the right amount”. We need to look for food that will keep us healthy, active, in a good shape and will fill us up with energy. Yes such food does exist and no you don’t need to spend a fortune on them. I call these special types of food as Superfood.

When I spent a month in the naturopathy centre near Pune I found such a Superfood that I simple love. It is loaded with goodies like calcium, iron, much required fibres and vitamins like A, B1, B2, B3. It is a godsend for people who are trying to make their bones healthy as it helps bone development and prevents osteoporosis.

Benefits of Ragi/ Nachani:

1. For Bones: Calcium: Rich source of calcium. More than any other grain hence a daily consumption can make our bones stronger.

2. For Digestion: This little grain is loaded with fibre that helps us lose weight as it aids our digestion. A small amount of Ragi can prevent bloating.

3. For Cholestrol: Ragi helps to decrease bad cholesterol. It also controls fat in liver.

I personally prefer the Ragi flour Roti made of only Ragi flour and not mixing it with anything but only water to enough to knead it into soft dough.

The recipe below is a special recipe for those special days when you feel weak and need a big boost of energy. It’s far better, healthier and tastier than any commercial energy bar or drink. I advise to go light on these if you are trying to lose weight as they are enriched with Ghee, Jaggery and Peanuts.

Ragi or nachani energy balls for instant energy:

Ingredients:
1 heaped cup Ragi or Nachani flour
1/4 cup Til or Sesame Seeds (white)
1/4 cup Peanuts
1/2 cup Jaggery grated
1 teaspoon Cardamom / Elaichi Powder
2 – 3 tablespoons Ghee or Clarified Butter

Method:
1. Dry roast Til or Sesame Seeds on a low flame till you get aroma.
2. Dry roast Groundnuts or Peanuts. Cool and remove skin. Finely grind both together.
3. Then add Jaggery and Cardamom / Elaichi Powder to the blended mixer and grind again.
4. In a frying pan dry roast Ragi flour. Add 1 or 2 tsps of ghee while roasting. There will be a pleasant aroma. Remove from heat when the colour gets slightly darker.
5. In a bowl mix all the ingredients
6. Take small portions of this mixture and roll them into balls. If the mixture is dry then add little ghee for making balls

Variation:
a. If you are having trouble making balls of the above mixture you can flatten it out in a plate or a baking tray. Press it and cut it into cubes.
b. If you are allergic to peanuts you can add any other nut of your choice.
c. If you are not sure about the jaggery taste then instead of using only jiggery you can use a mixure of jaggery and powdered sugar. I would always recommend dark organic jaggery over sugar as it is the healthier option.

Nowadays Cucumber is dominating my kitchen. When I studied its benefits I picked up a lot of cucumber. After eating it raw or in salads; I wanted to try something different with it. After some trial and error I am happy with one simple recipe which I have given at the end of this post. Before that let me give you some reasons to incorporate cucumber in your daily diet.

Benefits of Cucumber:

1. Helps in Weight Loss: This is what attracted me to this amazing humble vegetable. It is miraculously effective if you are trying to lose weight. Having a cucumber before each meal can help you get full with lesser calories than usual. Low calorie and high water content the perfect food to snack on whenever you feel hungry. Slice it thin or run it through a blender and have a refreshing green smoothie.

2. Promotes Digestion: If you include cucumber in your diet daily you can forever get rid of digestion problems. Cucumber is loaded with dietary fiber which effectively releases toxins from our digestive system. If you suffer from constipation have a cucumber day any of the week. Eat as many cucumbers as you can for your meal s the whole day it may sound difficult but it will cure the constipation better than any pill. My Personal Creamy Cucumber Soup Recipe:

This is how I am having Cucumber with my meal everyday:

I make a rich creamy thick soup of fresh green cucumber. I find this hot thick soup quite comforting compared to cold salads.

The recipe is simple:
. Cut 2 cucumbers (with skin) into small cubes,
. In a deep pan or a small pressure cooker take very little oil,
. Once the oil is hot add a tsp of fennel seeds/ jerra,
. Sauté 1 onion chopped finely,
. Optional you can sprinkle little dried fenugreek leaves/ kasturi methi
. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder,
. ½ tsp coriander powder,
. ½ tsp red chilli powder,
. Salt as per taste,
. Water just enough to make thick soup, boil or pressure cook till the cucumber is easily mashable,
. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Or you can use Italian spices like parsley and oregano for a different version.
For extra flavor crush in a cube of vegetable stock.

Go ahead try this healthy wholesome soup and let me know if you liked it. I keep my soup spicy but please make it as per your taste preference.

Godrej Expert Rich Crème Hair Colour Review – A Good Way to Cover Grey Hair.


I recently visited my uncle’s place and got into a long discussion about colouring grey hair. When it comes to hair colour, like most of the elders, my uncle and aunt also have a lot of mixed opinions and lot of confusion.

If they go for natural products like henna then it may not give a proper colour. If the hair has more salt then pepper then henna gives a funny reddish colour which most of the elderly people do not prefer. The alternative is chemical loaded expensive hair crème that has a high risk of damaging hair.

If we make up our mind to buy the expensive chemical loaded hair crème we do not get a smaller pack for trial. So we cannot be sure about the risk of allergy or any other damage. For those with short hair it makes no sense to buy these expensive hair crème big packs targeted for long hair.

I always wanted to try a hair colour but it had to be safe and ammonia-free. I have kept clear from chemical hair colour for long now and when I noticed the small pack of Godrej Expert crème hair colour I decided to give it a try. The small pack looked very convenient and also because it contains the goodness of aloe protein. Godrej claims that this product gives hair deep shine and makes it ultra soft. My uncle and aunt wanted to try it out.

The pack has 20 gm crème colourant and 20 ml of developer – they are pre-measured, so there is no confusion of ratio or no hassle of storing remaining colour. I found this as a very smart feature of this product. The price came as a pleasant surprise. For just 30 rupees, it felt like a very sweet deal. I picked up all the colours and got a nice variety of colours – (1) Natural Black, (2) Black Brown, (3) Dark Brown, (4) Natural Brown and (5) Burgundy.

My aunt was excited to try the Black Brown or Dark Brown colour. My uncle on the other hand like simple things and doesn’t get impressed easily. The no confusion pack got his ok. He liked the idea that he can use it without any measurement. The instructions on the pack are easy to understand and follow. Doing a Skin Hypersensitivity Test is always a good idea before trying any new product and the pack clearly instructs to perform a small patch test 48 hours before each application.
