5 Easy Habits to Introduce the Magic of Appreciation in Life.

5 Easy Habits to Introduce the Magic of Appreciation in your Life.

5 Habits of Appreciation.

Here goes a small tale I heard from a learned speaker trying to teach her audience about appreciation:

“A husband returns home from work to find his wife sitting on couch digging in a big bag of chips while watching TV, the house was a mess and his usually dolled up wife matched the house in appearance. She was still in her night cloths with messed up hair and a pile of home delivered food’s empty containers lied on the coffee table in front of the couch. His emotions changed from stunned, angered and then worried within minutes. He went close to his wife and holding her hand he asked in a lowered volume, “what happened? Is everything fine?” She gave him a smile and calmly said “nothing.”

He went in the kitchen and saw there was no dinner prepared and the sink was overflowing with dirty dishes, he went to the bedroom and saw the bed still not made up. Laundry laying here and there, even his wet towel which he threw on the bed in the morning dried there itself. He rushed back to his wife and now with a firm voice he asked again, “Please tell me what’s the matter?” His wife gave him a sweet smile and replied “Nothing dear everyday you ask me, “what the hell you do whole day long?” So I did nothing today.”

Conclusion:

I hope the husband learned the lesson but don’t we do the same. Don’t we always take people close to us for granted? How many times do we appreciate our loved ones? Our spouse or children or parents or siblings or friends or anyone who we depend upon? we don’t realise the importance of their presence in our life. Why don’t we appreciate the people in our life? Saying a simple thank you can be more powerful than we realise.

I do most of the cooking at home. When my busy husband takes out time to cook anything I appreciate it till he blushes. It’s not at all about the food he cooks or the work he puts into it but the thought that counts the most for me. As a result he loves making more of these crazy experimental dishes for us. He puts his heart and soul in them because he knows his efforts are not only recognised but also appreciated. The result as you guessed right is always great food plus amazing quality time in the kitchen together.

Don’t get me wrong it’s not about getting work done from your spouse plan, showing your love for each other by doing something different and special together makes the life worth celebrating. In that couple of hours we forget the daily grind and enjoy the present that means not thinking about the past or worrying about the future.

“The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don’t have.” ~ Woody Allen.

We are the happiest when we Live in the Present. It may feel hard to spend most of our time in the present as we are used to think about our past or worry about future. We need to reprogram our mind to appreciate more and complain less. It is easy to tame your mind into a very beneficial positive appreciation habits using any or all below mentioned methods. I gathered following tricks from many influential books like The Power of Appreciation, Creative Visualization.

5 Habits of Appreciation:

1. Appreciation Prayer: Like me if you are one of those who pray, this will be the easiest way for you to start your appreciation habit. Just after your daily prayer, Thank God for something big or small. Feel grateful. It can be a single thing or a list of things. You will soon see the difference and get a feel of your prayers being answered.
2. Appreciation Diary: This can be the old school actual diary as many of us grew up writing in or the latest digital version in our computers or smart phones. Maintaining a diary is fun. We can document all our achievements big or small and when we need encouragement just going through this diary is bound to lift our spirits and help us create more reasons to write in that diary.
3. Appreciation Object: If you have read or watch “The Secret” you will immediately know what I am talking about for those who haven’t yet I would love to expand on this. An appreciation object is anything you can carry with you daily in your pocket that can remind you to be grateful of everything in your life. It can be a small rock, toy, marble, or anything small enough to carry and unique enough that you will remember its purpose. Whenever you touch it say thank you for something in your life…simple.
4. Appreciation before or after sleep: Just like appreciation prayer counting your blessing before or after your sleep can be a sure shot way to have a positive and productive day ahead. Plus it is far interesting then counting sheep. 
5. Appreciation as and when required: Saying thank you at the right time for the right reason can help not only in your work but personal life as well. So never miss an opportunity to say thank you. It is very important that these thanks are genuine and not just a formality. It will make the other person feel good and the relationship will only benefit from a good heartfelt thank you.

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.” – Oprah Winfrey

So how have you introduce the power of Appreciation in your life?

Vijaya Dashami – The Day I touched Divine.

Vijaya Dashami – The Day I touched Divine

Vijaya Dashami – The Day I touched Divine

I am not a born Bengali but become a part of this Vibrant and Beautiful community from the day I got married. Actually a decade before that; when I started dating my (now) husband. While dating I did participate in the beautiful culture by attending the Saraswati Puja at the Anandmayi Ashram and getting the divine blessings of Ma Saraswati who has always been generous with her blessings on me. In those college days we feasted like royalty on Durga Puja by attending the multiple Pandals and having the lip smacking Bhog and saving our pocket money to indulge on the Bengali delicacies available in the temporary stalls of the festive Durga Puja Pandals.

I still feel the excitement of a young college girl exploring a new world whenever I step into a pandal. The curiosity to know as much as possible, the concentration required to repeat every word after the pandit at the time of Astami Anjali, uproar of the Shankha, fragrance of the Shiuli Flowers, thump of the Dhak, clouds of incense emitting while a devotee is in a trance of Dhunuchi Naach and all this blending into an immense celebration of the Divine Shakti still gives me the goose bumps like I am experiencing everything for the first time.

I had to wait a decade before I could take part in one ritual that I adore the most. On the last day of Durga Puja which is also known as Vijay Dashmi all the married women get to perform a unique and special ritual.

The women dressed up in the iconic red border Bengali saree and big red bindies; perform the Dashmi Puja by getting close enough to touch, apply sindoor, offer Prasad/sweets to the massive idols of Ma Durga, Ma Lakmi, Ma Saraswati, Lord Kartikey and Lord Ganesh. This has always fascinated me as I have seen huge idols of various Hindu Gods in temples, in Ganesh Chaturti and other festivals but here it is hard enough to reach the idols feet let alone applying Sindoor on forehead and actually feeding the idols sweet with your hands.

Here I do not want to get into the debate about idol worship because as per my hindu upbringing and beliefs touching those beautiful clay idols is as good as touching the Divine Shakti herself.

Last year on Vijay Dashmi, I was standing in the line of women to perform this beautiful ritual. I have a very curious mind and do not hesitate to ask anyone about their take on spirituality.

I summed up all my courage and asked the women ahead of me in the line, “What do you say to Ma when you get so close to her?” I got almost similar answers from most of them as they ask for health and happiness for their family, they ask for success for their husband and children, they ask for help when they need some and as such blessings from the Ma.

I pondered on the thought about what I shall say. I knew I would not get a lot of time in front of the Idol, the line was huge and every lady was getting rushed. I had a list of things I could ask for to Ma but this list is always in my mind so naturally it reflects in my daily prayers. I wanted to use these few beautiful minutes that I get once in a year with the Idol of the Divine, which is full of the positive energy of so many people by expressing my inner most thoughts and prayers.

The moment I got on the podium and close to the Idol of Lord Ganesh my inner most prayer came out of my heart and it was “Thank You”. I kept repeating Thank you constantly. Thank you for this opportunity to express my inner most thoughts for you, thank you for this life and everything you have blessed me with so far and thank you for all the blessings you have lined up for me in the future.

I touched a pinch of Sindoor on the foreheads, hands and feet on all five Idols, I fed them with a morsel of sweet and while doing all this I constantly kept repeating Thank you as a Mantra. I could feel the warmth of the Divine Smile graciously accepting my prayers.

The day I touched Divine and Thanked her for everything – I felt blessed.

Wake up to a Gold Morning with this Simple Morning Mantra

Today morning I was pleasantly surprised when I received a beautiful gift from Colgate (#Colgate360GoldMornings). The gift’s packaging reminded me how wonderful a morning can be. I consider myself a positive person but just like everyone else, I too sometimes get overwhelmed with the challenges of the daily grind.

My husband works long hours and it gets frustrating for us as many times we have to compromise on our sleep and today was one of those days. The alarm went off and I dragged myself out of the bed with a heavy head. I was feeling a grumpy, as I was busy with my morning chores the doorbell rang. I opened the door with almost a grunt and was surprised with a package. Coalgate scheduled the delivery before 7am and I got mine in time.

Before even opening the package, I could sense a big change in my mood. I felt happy to be surprised in such a nice way and when I opened the package, I was impressed with how beautiful and uplifting the contents and design on the packaging was.

Colgate Gold Morning

Colgate Gold Morning

My mood this morning turned from grumpy to inspired after reading the first sentence on the Colgate box; “It’s time to wake up to a Gold Morning!” I am grateful to Colgate (#Colgate360GoldMornings) to remind me how important it is to start the morning on a positive note. Every morning we are given a chance to start anew. Everything that is important to us gets a fresh opportunity with the start of a new day.

I completely agree with these motivational words of Og Mandino; “Welcome every morning with a smile. Look on the new day as another special gift from your Creator, another golden opportunity to complete what you were unable to finish yesterday. Be a self-starter. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don’t waste it with a false start or no start at all. You were not born to fail.”

My Morning Mantra is simple it is just two words – “Thank You”. I have a ritual of saying “Thank You!” the moment I wake up. Almost every day I wake up feeling grateful for my life. Some rare days like today I forget to say my mantra but I do get to it later in the day. I thank the creator for another day, another opportunity and another chance to try to fulfill my dreams.

I fill my day with optimism by being grateful for everything that has made my life. You know what makes my good mornings turn to Gold, it is a simple but very powerful practice of counting my blessings and being grateful for them.

Why we need to be careful of what we say after the words “I Am”.

A Christmas gift at the end of the post.

“I Am That I Am” are considered sacred words as it is the response what Moses got when he asked God for his name. Spiritual speakers like Wayne Dyer, Pastor Joel Osteen and many more have highlighted the power of the words “I Am” in shaping our future. Dr. Wayne Dyer explains that the words “I Am” are sacred identification of God so we should be very cautious when we use these words in our day today life.

I am

I am

“The words I AM are your sacred identification as God- your highest self. Take care how you use this terms because saying anything after I AM that’s incongruent with God is really taking the Lord’s name in vain!” — Wayne W. Dyer

As per Pastor Joel Osteen the words “I Am” are magnetic and whatever we put after “I Am” comes looking for us. Whatever we say after the words “I Am” we invite that in our life.

Let us take a look at our thoughts; what do we mostly say or think after “I Am” in our regular phrases. Do we say “I Am Sick,” “I Am Tired”, “I Am Depressed,” “I Am Fed up,” “I Am Scrapping by,” “I Am Broke,” “I Am Lonely,” or do we think the exact opposite.

When you get up and see yourself in the mirror what are your first thoughts. “I Am looking so old,” or “I Am so fat,” or do you say “I Am always late,”

Take an honest test of your thoughts and answer this question. Is your life attracting exactly what you say after “I Am” or this spiritual law does not apply to you. Take your time start keeping check of your thoughts and spoken words and note if they actually become a reality in your life.

If this spiritual law works in your life I have amazing good news for you. You can shape your own future and your own life. Just get extremely conscious about your words. Never say or think anything negative about you and while you are at it why to think anything negative about others too. Just remove every negative thought and word from your life.

Make a list of affirmations that means a lot to you starting with “I Am” and read it in the morning after you get up, at night before you sleep and if you like read it whenever you get time during the day. Play it like a song in your head. Even if the affirmations are not true (yet) you should always use present tense to set the positive forces in motions.

I have mentioned some affirmations starting with the sacred, magical, magnetic words “I Am” in my post – Create A Better Tomorrow with Pre-Sleep Visualization

“I am well,”
“I am content,”
“I am lucky,”
“I am rich,”
