This article is inspired by Arun’s comment on my post lose weight, get ageless vibrant health and radiant beauty with anulom vilom pranayam where he asked about food to eat while practicing pranayama. A brief reply to the comment cannot do justice to this important topic hopefully this article does. I would be grateful if more readers can give inputs as we all are on a journey towards good health while overcoming many challenges along the way. We need to help and support each other to win this uphill battle against unhealthy lifestyle diseases. I have faith together we can win and I invite all the readers to contribute their ideas as every bit of knowledge can make the struggle a lot easier.

Satvik Diet

Satvik Diet

I have written a few articles (some are mentioned below) about food that support weight loss, one can have these foods while practicing Yoga and Pranayama.

. Replace Rice with Broken Wheat/ Dalia for a Slimmer and Healthier You

. Ragi Energy Balls For Instant Energy (Dieters, Pregnant or Lactating Ladies)

To enjoy maximum benefit out of your daily Yoga and Pranayama Practice one must follow a Satvik Diet also known as a Yogic Diet.

Satvik Diet is diet based on ancient wisdom of sages of India for whom Ayurveda, Yoga and Pranayama where important part of a healthy lifestyle. They religiously followed ahimsa (non-harming) hence the diet was purely vegetarian. They also believed in having freshly cooked meals and stale food was considered as an invitation to diseases. As per Indian Culture, food is given Divine importance and it is treated with upmost respect.

Satvik diet encourages foods grown and ripened naturally. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables should cover up your plate more than any other food if you want to eat clean and healthy. It is also advisable to avoid overcooking vegetables to preserve their nutrients. Please try to consume as much raw vegetables as possible as they can give you tons of nutrients and fiber that helps in weight loss.

Processed and factory made food are bad for us. Our body cannot make sense of them. Avoid eating any ready to eat or semi-cooked meal, which are usually loaded with harmful chemicals and preservatives. We cannot digest most of these chemicals and they end up messing with our hormones. Processed food is mostly unnatural and harmful, if taken regularly can cause serious health issues.

I would highly recommend a Satvik diet and lifestyle for Yoga and Pranayama practitioners. Following is a list of food one should have and avoid for a healthy lifestyle. I encourage everyone to contribute to the list to grow our knowledgebase.

10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting Easy

10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting Easy

They say losing weight is not a sprint but a marathon and that is so right. Getting fit is not about picking up salad now and then but it’s a life time commitment. The celebrities we envy for their amazing figure stay that way because of their dedication and determination towards their health not to mention the army of experts they have to tell them what to eat. Anyways I personally hate the word dieting. I prefer eating right or eating healthy as that is exactly what one should do while trying to get slim.

It is always a good idea to get your doctor’s advice before you start any diet. There are many medical reasons why a person gains weight it can because of hormonal imbalance, PCOS, Stress, Thyroid or any other tendency in body that makes it store more fat than required. It is important that you get necessary tests done and find out the precise cause of your weight gain. Once you get a cure for the health problem that keeps you fat, losing weight will become easy and effortless. Do not follow fad diets that have one glove fits all attitude, they never work.

“Enjoy losing weight. Enjoy eating healthy, delicious food. Do not wait until you reach your destination to feel good. Take as much happiness and joy as you can from your weight loss journey.” — Harry Papas.

Find out a tailor-made diet for you from your doctor or a licensed nutritionist. The right advice will help you get all the required nourishment while you lose excess fat. If we just focus on the weighing scale we might create vitamin deficiency and invite some other health issue. Our goal should be getting completely healthy or as I always say Vibrantly Healthy and Radiantly Beautiful.

10 Slimming Tips that Makes Dieting Easy

1. Inspiration: Fill up your surrounding with inspiring images of yourself at your ideal weight or cut out some images of celebrities and pin them up wherever you can see them regularly like your bathroom mirror, next to your bed, in your closet, on your desk, on fridge door or on the ceiling above your bed. Anywhere and everywhere you can see. It may look silly to others but there is a reason behind this mental strategy. If you constantly see fit and healthy images your subconscious mind will pick it up and start making a new healthy blueprint for your body.

2. Preparation: Before you start eating healthy prepare your kitchen with enough stock of the right kind of food. Store enough quantity of healthy and fresh food like fruits and vegetables. Don’t wait to eat till you are starving. Prepare your healthy meal, vegetable juices/ smoothies and salads in time so you don’t snack on anything unhealthy.

3. Smaller Plates: This is the best tip to start eating well. You will notice a decrease in your food intake as soon as you start eating in smaller plates and bowls. When we were kids our parents told us to finish everything on our plate and that programming is still engraved in our mind. Hence if we eat in bigger plates we unconsciously eat more than our requirement. If you always feel bloated after meal you should immediately switch to smaller plates. Smaller portion in a small plate creates the illusion of plenty which gives a satisfying signal to our brain even before we start eating.

4. Keep away from Temptations: If you find it difficult to say no to temptations. It is a good idea to stay away from it. I will still say it is ok to have a controlled helping of your most desired food once in a while as long as it is not frequent. Avoid completely any food that leaves a guilty feeling.

5. Keep Full: The best way to stay on track with your diet is to keep yourself full with allowed or healthy options. Eat a large bowl of salad or fruits or a handful of nuts at the time you know you get hungry. If you keep healthy food nearby before your hunger pangs start you will save yourself from eating unhealthy food.

6. Raw Food: Eating raw food like salads, raw vegetables smoothing, nuts and fruits may take some getting used to but they can be a blessing for your metabolic rate. Eating raw colorful fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source of fiber that helps improve our digestion. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables before meals and during snack time will cure bloating, constipation and indigestion. Raw fruits and vegetables make our skin healthy and glowing.

7. Keep Records: By keeping records of change in your weight and measurements you keep yourself motivated. Fix a day and time to check your weight and measurements and write down the changes in diary or on your computer. Now days many mobile apps are available for this purpose. In some amazing apps you can also record daily calorie intake and number of calorie burnt after exercise. I am strongly against checking weight daily as that puts a lot of stress on us. Our weight fluctuates up and down when we are dieting so checking it on a weekly basis helps us see the exact difference.

8. Eat Slow and Enjoy your Food: When we suddenly start eating smaller portions it can feel challenging. For me the best solution for this is eating slowly and chewing food for a longer time. I do not eat in front of TV anymore. I sit in a quiet and peaceful place without any disturbance and enjoy my food for as long as I can. Of course we cannot do this for our breakfast and lunch but I advice to eat your dinner peacefully and slowly. Enjoy each and every bite of your food by eating it slowly and chewing for a longer time. Do not get negative thoughts that I do not like this food or why only I have to eat like this. Show love and respect to whatever healthy food you are having and in return you will see its positive impact on your health. By eating slowly and chewing for a longer time digests the food in a much better way. You will feel full with very little food and will avoid overeating and all its ill effects like indigestion, bloating.

9. Positive Body Image: The body image we have in our subconscious mind drafts a blueprint that each cell in our body follows. If subconsciously we feel like a fat person than we have automated our body cells to keep us fat. That is the main reason a fat person gains back all the lost weight. Similarly a person with a slim body image in the subconscious mind stays slim without much effort. Changing our subconscious mind’s body image is time consuming and challenging. In my next post I will mention tips to change our body image to slim and healthy.

10. Keep Hydrated: Dehydration can be a side effect of dieting and drink a lot of healthy fluids like water, green tea or unsweetened vegetable and fruit juices can keep you hydrated. Healthy fluid maintains our body’s pH balance and keeps our skin soft and young.

5 Ayurvedic Cleanse Recipes to Re-Ignite Your Body’s Digestive Fire J I G I S H A a.k.a Nitin Badhwar / Foter.com / CC BY-SA

The dawn of New Year brings lots of hopes and promises. First day of every New Year for all of us encourages fresh start and our body very much deserves one. Our body has been constantly working for us and our stomach takes up a lot of strain in the holiday season Durga Puja, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the night we test its limits the New Years Eve.

I am not against celebration on the contrary I love all these festivals but from this year I want to help my stomach and entire body unwind and refresh so that it can pass through the coming year stronger and healthier. I am interested to make some changes that will help reduce the body age as we leap in yet another year. How am I going to do this? Two words – Ayurvedic Cleanse.

1. Cleansing Water –

Recipe: 1 Tall Glass of Water, 1 tsp Lemon Juice, 1 tsp Honey, Mix all ingredients together

Have this cleansing water every morning to flush out toxins and removes excess fat.

2. Cleansing Tea –

Recipe: 2 Cups of water, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1 tsp coriander seeds

Boil the seeds together till the water is reduced to 1 cup, strain and have it instead of your morning coffee or tea. If possible have it twice a day.

3. Green Tea –

Add Tulsi Leaves also known as Holy Basil to your green tea after your meals. Tulsi leaves is considered very important in Ayurveda as it has stress hormones reducing properties. It can control stress or lifestyle related disorders.

4. Green Moong Soup

Recipe: Soak Green Moong overnight then pressure cooker it with little oil, 1 onion, 2 chopped green chillies, 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp red chilli powder, salt as per taste. Water enough to make thick soup. You can add any vegetables to it or any garnish to keep it interesting.

For deeper cleanse of your body replace all your meals with the healthy and filling Green Moong Soup. Try doing this on the less busy days as this change may make you feel weak. If you feel too weak just have some brown rice or brown bread with your soup. You can be on this cleansing diet for maximum 7 days or just for a day. Go as your body suggests.

If you are pregnant, under heavy medication or have any serious medical condition please take advice of your doctor before trying this or any other diet.

I Ayurvedic centre they do encourage having two tsp of Pure Ghee a day in your soups. Make sure the Ghee or Clarified Butter is pure and made of Cow’s Milk.

5. Moong Dal Khicari:

Recipe: Pressure cooker – 1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter) or sesame/ sunflower oil, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1 tsp mustard seeds, turmeric, fresh grated ginger root (optional), Rock salt as required, 2 pinches hing/ asafetida, 1 cup rice, 1 cup split mung dal (yellow or green, or whole mung beans soaked overnight), 4 cups water.
Add vegetables if you prefer.

This light Khicari if made watery enough for your stomach is like spending a day in the spa. It can give your stomach the much needed rest and can help it wind down and refresh. After your Green Moong Soup Diet days you can get your stomach back to regular foods by replacing your meals with this Khicari for a day or two.

Extra Tips:

1. To flush out toxins have as many healthy liquids like buttermilk, water, green teas, fruits and vegetables juices. Take these in large quantities and avoid coffee, tea and sugary sodas.

2. Go for light exercise like walking or any other workouts during your cleansing days.

3. Try to Meditate or Visualize Positve thoughts in the morning and through out the day.

4. You will find it very relaxing to get an Ayurvedic Sesame Oil Massage during cleansing days.

Happy New Year and Thank you for all the love and encouragement you guys have shwon to The Vibrant Writer Blog. May this New Year bring you more of Health, Wealth and Happiness.

Green Tea: Every day Visit to the Fountain of Youth

Fountain of Youth – Green Tea

Fountain of Youth – Green Tea

Find the fountain of youth in the nearest store if not in your kitchen. No I have not lost my mind. Fountain of youth is very much real and easily available and in many forms. The only condition for this fountain to work is it needs to be visited daily. Ok enough of sounding all mysterious, I am taking about the amazing natural resources that are easily available but do not get as much attention as they deserve.

I have researched 3 all natural resources that can turn your body age clock backwards and keep you young, fit, active, and beautiful. I will elaborate on only the first natural resource as I want to discuss this in detail. The rest two I’ll discuss in the following posts.

Adding green tea at least 3 to 4 cups alone itself can be the best change you can do to build the fountain of youth inside your body. It is loaded with Antioxidants, Polyphenols, Flavonoids and Vitamin C that boost the immune system to make the human body stronger in fighting various infections, it prevents inflammation of teeth and gums. It keeps cold and flu away as it also;

Fights Obesity:
Powerful antioxidants in green tea fights obesity by increasing the body’s ability to burn fat, improve muscle endurance, enhance energy level, and boost metabolism. It aids digestion, detoxifies the body and reduces cholesterol. Its diuretic property eliminates excess water which reduces excess weight due to water retention.

Fights Cancer:
Green tea’s antioxidants (catechins) hunt for free radicals that can damage DNA and contribute to cancer, blood clots, and atherosclerosis. It protects against cancer including breast, colon, colorectal, skin, lung, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, liver, ovarian, prostate and oral cancer. It protects from damages from sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

Fights Ageing:
Antioxidants (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) support the body’s natural anti-ageing process by fighting free radicals. It helps to slow down the premature ageing process. It also provides hydration benefits to body.

Fights Heart Disease:
Green tea promotes a healthy heart by lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) and improving the health of body cells lining the blood vessels. The flavonoids protect the heart by relaxing the blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Its antioxidants are also dilators that improve the flexibility of blood vessels and make them less vulnerable to clogging reducing the severity of coronary heart disease.

Fights Diabetes:
Green tea reduces the rise of blood sugar by regulating glucose levels. It stimulates insulin production. Regular use of green tea brings the blood sugar level in the body to normal.

Fights Neurological Diseases:
Regular consumption of green tea helps in prevention of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson`s as ‘Polyphenols’ in it maintains the memory parts of our brain.

So there is no reason that one should delay the habit of drinking green tea.
Please remember to keep your green tea bag or leaves for at least 2 to 3 minutes in hot water before drinking.
Never add milk, cream, sugar or any sugar substitute in your green tea.
You can add some natural honey to make it sweet.

I will mention about the remaining 2 all natural resources in upcoming posts.
