Replace Rice with Broken Wheat/ Dalia for a Slimmer and Healthier You

Rice has always been an important part of meal for me. Indian food has a treasure of delicious rice preparations and they are very addictive. We Indians love our rice. Different parts of the nation like rice in their own special way. In south it is enjoyed with Sambhar, in north there is Rajma or Dal Makhani, in east Macher Jhol (Bengali Fish Curry) and in west has its Gujrati Kaadi or Rajasthani Dal Khichadi or Maharastrian Varan. These are just few gems of the treasure. There are hundreds of recipes if not more that celebrate rice in India and I love them all.

Do you get the picture how important rice is for me? Few months back I was advised by my yoga instructor to give up rice to get into my desired weight. She knew it was my weakness and knew I wouldn’t follow portion so she advised me to stop eating it completely. Rice was the main reason I was not reaching my desired weight and giving it up was the right thing to do but was it easy? On no it was not. I struggled so bad to fight the cravings.

Even if I could avoid rice for few days I would easily cheat on my if I came across any delicious rice preparation. My will power was very week and the guilt of not staying on the diet would make me depressed. Luckily I found a solution to this problem. I started experimenting with Dalia also known as Lapsi Rava or Broken wheat. It is far healthier than rice even brown rice and has fewer calories.

Within only few days I noticed a lot of improvement in my . My energy levels were higher. I felt full for longer time which stopped irregular intakes of snacks. My digestion was better which made me feel lighter. I don’t have to deal with unnecessary calories and guilt anymore. Dalia is cooked exactly like rice and it tastes like rice with dals and curries. Dalia is an easy option for a slimmer and healthier you.

Benefits of Dalia/Cracked or Broken Wheat:

1. Great source of fiber and a healthy dalia meal can complete your daily fiber requirement

2. It is a complex carbohydrate and a rich source of magnesium

3. High in protein but low in calories

4. It is a great source of energy and has low glycemic index

5. It improves digestion and promotes faster elimination of waste and toxins from body

6. It stabilizes glucose as it releases glucose slowly into the bloodstream

7. Rich source of Vitamin B1 and B2

Dalia is cooked just like rice and can be used instead of rice in all rice preparations. Be it with dal, curry or any gravy. Dalia can be used instead of rice in Khichadi, Pulav and even Biryani. Check out the next post for some Dalia recipes I enjoy and why I never miss rice anymore.

The Great Indian Litterbug – Monkey See Monkey Do

The Great Indian Litterbug – Monkey See Monkey Do

The Great Indian Litterbug – Monkey See Monkey Do

Last month I went on a weekend outing with a bunch of friends. We were a mix of all sorts married, single, newly married, about to get married and a couple with a kid. Stuffed in 3 cars we drove from Mumbai to Panchgani and most of the group was cranky because of the long drive and also because we got up early.

The only parents in our group knew how to keep the kid quite. They were carrying a big bag of goodies with them. All kinds of junk food from sweets, chips, biscuits, namkeens everything a person on diet is not suppose to eat was in that bag. I named that bag a dentist’s nightmare but didn’t share it out loud with the group. Yes there were a couple of crayons in the bag with a sketch book but the child was least interested in art. He would not even look at the wrapper of the treat he opened. Just gulp it down and go for another.

The parents were non stop giving him treats packed in all kind of wrappers. He was unwrapping one and throwing it in the car. When I asked him why he is throwing the wrappers here and there he told me because the window is closed. I looked at the mother and she was least interested. As long as he child was eating he was not bothering her and she was catching up with her sleep in the car while the apple of her eyes was playing garbage tornado.

I picked up the biggest bag which was a jumbo size chips bag and started collecting wrappers from all over the car. I told the little boy to put his next empty wrapper in that big chips bag so that we can dispose it properly in a dustbin at the food court where we were planning to stop. He simply replied “No!” and threw the wrapper at me. The parents didn’t try to discipline him and I had no idea how to handle this situation. I could barely keep my cool.

The sun was rising and we took a break in Lonavala at a tea stall near the highway. The kid got out of the car with his precious bag of goodies and I got down with the garbage. When I was going to throw the bag of chips in the dustbin near the tea stall, he snatched it from me ad started throwing the garbage everywhere on the side of the road. The stall owner yelled out don’t do that it will attract monkeys. I looked at his mother and she nicely told him to stop and sit in the car which he ignored. She was even buying him more treats at the stall.

The stall owner was right, garbage did attract monkeys. They came in numbers and we all held to our belongings because they are famous to snatch anything they can. After realising that the wrappers were empty they came closer to see if we had any food on us. The boy with a big bag of treats got their attention. They all rushed at him and he screamed and ran towards his father. The gang of monkeys followed him. His father picked him up and started shooing then shouting on the monkeys. His mother also ran for the rescue.

Everyone in the group was trying to find something to scare the monkeys away. They were not budging. They had their eyes set on his bag of treats and were not leaving the poor family. Someone yelled throw the bag away…far away. The father pulled that bag and threw it as far as possible. Monkeys ran towards the bag and finally we could see the family. They were scratched, slapped, scared and the boy’s t-shirt was torn a bit. They looked like they have been through hell and this all happened in just few minutes. So quick that we could not even react.

When everything was quite again I went to the shaken boy and said, “you know if only you would have let me thrown your garbage in the bin”. He looked at me in tears and said, “I am sorry. I will never throw garbage here and there again.” The mother was shocked. It was his first “I am sorry” statement. The family was changed on their way back home. I wish every Indian learns the lesson of not being a litterbug at a young age. Let’s stop being so ignorant and arrogant. Let’s keep our country clean. It is time to change our image. I am highly impressed with “The Great Indian Litterbug” initiative taken by Times of India and of course by “The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” by our Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Amla Goodness – Spoonful a Day (Dabur Chyawanprash).

dabur chyawanprash brandlogo

dabur chyawanprash brandlogo

Everyday millions of Indians all over the world have a spoonful of goodness. They incorporate immunity and health in their life daily with a spoonful of Chyawanprash. Chyawanprash is loaded with nutrition of Amla and other Ayurvedic ingredients like Ashwagandha, Guduchi. In my post Amla or Indian Gooseberry: Every day Visit to the Fountain of Youth (part 2) I have already mentioned how beneficial consuming Amla is and Chyawanprash is the one of the best ways we can do it.

From childhood my parents have made sure I take a spoonful of Dabur Chyawanprash twice a day. They didn’t had to force me as I love the taste it’s a delicious mix of so much health that it increases our immunity and shields our body from sickness like cough and cold. When I moved out of my parents house for a while I didn’t take care of my health. I was lazy, ignorant or just completely stupid like many others youngsters moving out the house for the first time.

Slowly and steady I got a grip on my health and it takes discipline to live a healthy and active life. Today I make sure that I and my husband have Chyawanprash daily. My health strategy is simple it is better safe than sorry. I encourage every spouse and parent to encourage their loved ones to start the habit of taking Chyawanprash daily. I choose Dabur’s over any other available in the market simply because Dabur Chyawanprash has anti-oxidant properties and helps to strengthen your body’s internal defence mechanism – the immune system – thereby protecting you from day to day infections such as cough, cold etc.

Dabur Chyawanprash’s magnificent brew of Ayurvedic herbs strengthens the body’s natural defence mechanism by stimulating your NK cells* (Natural Killer Cells). NK cells assist in fighting with virus and bacteria in your body, thus giving us increased immunity from various infections. Recent scientific studies conducted on Dabur Chyawanprash have proven its immunomodulatory and anti-allergic potential. It is a time-tested, age-old formulation has a number of herbs like Amla, known to be one of the best antioxidants, Giloy (Guduchi), known to have immuno-modulatory properties, and has more than 40 other natural ingredients.

Our Children are our pride and joy. We love them and care for them and we let their warmth and energy fill our hearts and our homes. When this precious source of energy falls sick, its effects are felt throughout the house and it sometimes feels like the house itself has fallen ill. Dabur Chyawanprash, a time-tested, age-old formulation has a number of herbs like Amla, known to be one of the best antioxidants, Giloy (Guduchi), known to have immuno-modulatory properties, and more than 40 other natural ingredients. Dabur Chyawanprash increases Immunity by 3 times* & hence protects against illness. After all a healthy child makes a happy home.

Other interesting facts about my favorite Chyawanprash:
• Dabur is the first branded Chyawanprash in the country
• It is the highest selling Chyawanprash with more than 60% market share
• It is scientifically proven to provide 3 times immunity* that helps fight virus, flu and infections

• It contains natural Ayurvedic ingredients, which are being consumed safely for ages.
• Dabur Chyawanprash was launched in 1949 in a tin pack which became the first branded Chyawanprash in India, widening the popularity and usage of traditional Ayurvedic products.

Dettol Multi-Use Wipes Cleans Up Instantly and Effectively

Christmas Day is so much fun especially when you are spending it with kids. This Christmas I gave a different kind of gift to my friend. Her 6-year-old son was looking forward to watch the movie ‘Penguins of Madagascar’ but she was feeling a bit under the weather and was making excuses to avoid the holiday rush in the mall.

I couldn’t see his cute little face getting all sad and I offered to take him to watch the movie and for his favourite kids’ meal at the mall we regularly visit. Little did I knew that he would invite a friend and so on the very crowded day of Christmas me and my husband ended up babysitting two very energetic and very active boys.

Being well aware of the crowd situation we reached the mall a couple of hours before the movie started. While I was clicking photos of the kids with the mall Santa and around the pretty Christmas decorations, my husband went in the supermarket and got some drinking water, chips, bandages and Dettol Mutli—Use Wipes. I didn’t understand why we needed so many things we were out only for few hours we were not going on some trip but he said it will come handy.

The movie was amazing. We both enjoyed as much as the kids but when they turned on the lights I noticed the kids’ hands and faces were covered in sticky cheese popcorn dust. They both looked like they were dipped in the popcorn machine. When I stood speechless and tried to find my hankie in my bag my husband told me to use the mutli-wipes and he was so right about it.

It effectively cleaned cheese and was also useful when the kids had ice-cream all over their hands and face.

Dettol Mutli-Use Wipes helped me keep the kids clean without running multiple times to the jam-packed mall washroom. I couldn’t thank my husband enough for getting this amazing product. This comes in two sizes 10’s pack and 30’s pack. I will always carry the smaller pack in my bag the bigger pack will be kept someplace handy at home.

Put on those party shoes and get grooving

Although you might wake up woozy and heavy headed the next morning after a late night out with your friends and feel that it is not something that is good for you, you might be surprised that spending a night out actually has some benefits attached to it. Agreed, that heavy drinking is definitely not good for us, but throwing out your best moves on the dance floor can greatly bring down stress, tension and worrying. Stick to tonic water or mock tails if you are looking to prevent a hangover the next morning, but still want to have the best time of your night out. Also, it has been proven that moderate consumption of beer can help in reducing diabetes, heart disorders, strokes and dementia. So, maybe, a pint of your favourite lager might not be a bad idea after all.

Staying glued to that game

Cheering for your team while they play football can be a completely stressful event but if you are generally watching football on the television or on the screen, can actually impact your mental health in a positive way. According to a study conducted by the Mental Health Foundation, it was seen that men who are introverts and unable to share or talk about the feelings were more outgoing and extroverted when it came to watching their favourite sport. The study also revealed that over 78% of the men who participated in the study were not embarrassed to display their positive emotions, such as hugging their friends, during the game.

Bathing in the sun

Before you rush off to strip out and douse yourself in sunbathing oil, read further. Although a little bit of sun is good, too much sun is still bad you. Excessive exposure towards the sun may not only cause melanoma but can also result in premature skin ageing and cause actinic keratosis, which is a skin disorder, characterised by ungainly growths of scaly skin. Ensure you get your time in the sun, preferably early morning before 10 AM, as the early morning sun rays are not only helpful in alleviating tiredness but is also useful in boosting libidos and even easing depression. In addition, the early morning sun rays are also helpful in producing vitamin D which is extremely crucial to the good health of bones.

Watching your favourite flick

If you are of the opinion that only documentaries, educational or world cinema is good for you, then you are wrong. Although such movies are stimulating for the mind, sometimes it helps to go all out and watch a slapstick comedy, just to make the heart happy. According to leading researchers, watching happy and funny movies that cause us to laugh helps in expanding the blood vessels, which further helps in improving the flow of blood throughout the body.

Clean is Healthy & Happy (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan/ Clean India a Mass Movement)

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan/ Clean India a Mass Movement

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan/ Clean India a Mass Movement

“It does not require money, to live neat, clean and dignified..” — Mahatma Gandhi.

A new wave of positivity is taking over Indians all over the world. Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a much needed hope to the people of my country. He has shown us a vision of a Developed India. He has taken many initiatives towards the nation’s growth but the one that touched my heart is the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India a Mass Movement).

Indians are very serious about personal cleanliness. Most of us are groomed to follow a cleanliness morning ritual before our morning puja/ prayers. Every house is cleaned daily in the morning and we take cleaning to the whole new level during festival seasons when every nook and corner is scrubbed till everything in the house shines in its full glory. Most of us do not appreciate breakfast or any other meal in bed unless you are hospitalized. Outside shoes in the house is a strict NO.

What I want to say is Indians are clean but India is not and it is a sad fact that the Vibrant Leader of our nation wants to change. I would love to see a clean and healthy India and I am eager to know all the initiatives that the government will be taking for it.

Mr. Prime Minister has made the Clean India Project a Mass Mission (Abhiyan) because Government solely cannot turn this vision into reality. Each and every citizen will have to make it a personal mission to keep our country clean. I request Indians all over the world to be an active part of this mission where we can have a clean, healthy and happy future.

Message from Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on mygov.in:
“On 2nd October we are launching Swachh Bharat Mission, a massive mass movement that seeks to create a Clean India. Cleanliness was very close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart. A clean India is the best tribute we can pay to Bapu when we celebrate his 150th birth anniversary in 2019.”

How can we all contribute to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India a Mass Movement):

1. This festival season encourage your neighbors to take the cleanliness drive beyond houses and clean your society or neighborhood,

2. Donate time or/and money to cleanliness drives happening in your city,

3. Encourage colleagues to clean areas around offices,

4. Encourage management to take green initiatives for the entire organization not only to save the environment but also save a lot on companies cost. This may increase your annual bonus.

5. Spread the word. Tell as many people as possible about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India a Mass Movement). Encourage people to be an active contributor like you for the better future of everyone.

6. Teach kids methods of saving the environment like minimizing wastages, recycling, proper waste disposable and get them excited about planting and growing trees. When their young minds adopt the value of clean surroundings they will grow up to be environment savers and not damagers.

7. Complain to the right office or authorities about any unattended garbage bins or if garbage is not collected regularly.

8. Discourage people from littering and make them aware about the mass mission and its benefits.

9. Encourage colleagues, students, neighbors by arranging contests and campaigns to come up with ideas to keep your surroundings clean.

10. Give the entire nation the same respect you give to your home. This amazing country has given us a lot and it is our chance to repay by making it clean for our own health, happiness and prosperity.

Let’s make India clean green and beautiful together. Our ancestors fought for our freedom this is our chance to give all we got for our development.
